Gilling East is a small, tranquil town in the district of Ryedale, in the county of Yorkshire. Situated near the town of Helmsley, it is 30 km from York and 70 km from Leeds. Gilling East is known for its Castle it is located on a hill that dominates the town and dates back to XIII century. The castle is situated in a strategic location on a hill; it dominates the town and is actually the main building where the English classes take place. In 1929 the Benedictine monks of Ampleforth Abbey acquired the building and transformed it into the college that we know today.
The school St. Martins Ampleforth is surrounded by greenery and manicured gardens, near to the urban centre of Gilling East. Of the sumptuous buildings, the main feature is the Norman Tower known as the Grand Tower and the Great Hall (Great Dining Hall) with its impressive stained glass windows in the Elizabethan style. The school has many well equipped classrooms, TV room, computer room, billiards room, also cricket, football and rugby pitches, they also have basketball and badminton courts, and an interior sports centre.
In St. Martin’s Ampleforth the students will have full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The students will reside in shared rooms with 2 to 10 beds and shared bathrooms.
